Mrs Potts
Our ex-batts all have very different combs and this started me wondering why? I've seen from the forum that pink and plumpish is better than pale and floppy and I think that the more points/bigger they are, the older the hen is. But they have such different styles! Hetty, new boss, has the best looking one with about six small points to it (biggest ones closer to her back). Blanchette has the biggest comb, but with curves rather than points. Leia, bottom of the heap, has a very small comb that frankly would look better if she wasn't trying to grow one at all. It's small, pink and about half an inch high, with lumps. She seems quite healthy after her recent illness, though. What determines the number of points on a comb? Is it to do with diet or pecking order? Or a bit like trees that grow an extra ring a year?! Lewis
Not sure about how many points but nothing too scientific to do with feed or pecking order I don't think You might find their combs shrink and become more red with time. They grow larger in the battery cages as they try to lose heat from it.
