My Warrens have started laying eggs with bumps on the surface like co"Ooops, word censored!" sandpaper.

Different web sites give different causes - either an excess of calcium (or similar) or a possible disease in the chickens.

Does anyone know if it's safe to eat the eggs?

Welcome to the forum, Williar . Are they all laying eggs like this? How recently did they start laying?

 

I have one hen who lays eggs that are "sandpapery" at one end. I'm not an expert on eggs, but I think it's often just a blip or merely a characteristic of the hen's laying - there's no problem at all eating them . I think it's unlikely to be a disease but I would just keep the usual eye on your girls to rule anything sinister out.

My warren always laid quite rough eggs, sometimes with really raised blobs! We ate all of her eggs over two and a half years and we are all still here!!!

Thanks 'Ain't "Ooops, word censored!"ody Here'. This started about 2 weeks ago with just one hen, the egg is very pale as well as "Ooops, word censored!"bly.

The other hen is laying the usual smooth brown eggs as they've been doing for almost 2 years.

There's been no change in diet, and they look OK - nice full red combs.

Are the shells quite thin too? I have one girl who lays thin shelled rough pale eggs, they also have quite watery white's, they do improve slightly if I give them fresh grit, they are usually at their worst when the grit pot has run low. Some hens do lay much thinner more k"Ooops, word censored!"bly eggs as they age. My ony remaining Omlet hen lays very thin shelled eggs now and very few of them. She is 4 years old and I interested to see if she will lay at all this year.
