Housing quail in a WIR. Photos?

Recommended Posts

I've never kept quail before, but come the summer and following some proper research, I'm considering housing quail in a penned off section of the WIR.

If you've done this, could you possibly post a picture of your set up? I'm struggling to find any clear examples of how to make it work best... I mean, if the top of the quail run is made of mesh, will the chooks just perch and poo on/through it? How high should it be?

Any help would be great.

Thanks! :)

I was planning to do exactly that, and came to the same conclusion about chickens perching on the top!! instead I've bought a two tiered rabbit hutch, put that inside the WIR, and have 2 colonies in that - 5 in each half, they seem quite happy (not that quail actually DO much).

it has some advantages - easy to move and clean under/round; and the top makes a useful shelf for things - and chickens of course!

Ah well, back to the drawing board.

My quail have laid all through the Winter so they must love it. I feed them Garvo quailmixture which they are addicted to so that probably helps. They used to have a problem with pooing chickens but I now keep very large plastic tubs on top of the run and store all my spare drinkers, etc in them.
