Old Speckled Hen
I have a young crested legbar who has laid lovely blue eggs for about a month and now has stopped. I haven't had a blue egg for three weeks now. The other four, a vorwerk, and three hybrids are all laying. Could she be eating her own egg and leaving the others alone? I find maybe two or three in the nest box unmolested but never a blue one. Could she have just stopped for now? She looks well and is being happily treaded by the cockerel. Jools
I think you'd find signs if they were being eaten OSH - yolk stains and bits of shell. Could she have a secret nest somewhere? I have a RIR who insists on "laying away". Occasionally she obliges and uses her perfectly good nestbox, but if her eggs are missing for a couple of days I know she's found yet another secret nest site. And so the stake out begins until I catch her in the act! I've tricked her this time though and made a camoflage nest box in a woodpile with some pot eggs, which she's been using for a whole week now! Lavenders_Blue
It's possible she's egg eating, has anything happened to upset her? One of my hens egg eats when new chickens arrive and the only clue to it happening is seeing her jump out of the coop after laying but no egg to be found - she doesn't leave a trace. No yolk, no bits of shell. I don't know how she does it! You may just have to watch your hen like a hawk for a few days if you can to be sure. Of course she may well have just found a nicer place to lay her eggs Jools, I love the idea of you outsmarting your hen with a camouflage nest box! Barkisland
My Cream Legbar laid lovely blue eggs from February til October in her first 'season'. She stopped laying suddenly, and I assumed she would resume in the spring - but she never did It's been well over a year since I had a blue egg, but she still sits in the nest box as if she wants to lay. It's a mystery.
