What to ask the breeder?

Recommended Posts

Hello :) A friend of mine is thinking of buying a labradoodle and doesn't really know what to look for when buying a dog as it is the first one he has bought. I know you should always look at the living conditions & make sure you see the mother, but are there any questions that should be asked? I've never had a dog, but he has been doing his research so just needs to know what to look for now! Thanks for any advice :)

Make sure the ears and clean and don't smell (there should be no black matter in the ears) Check that it doesn't have an 'outie' belly button. Check that the teeth meet correctly and that neither the upper or lower jaw stick out significantly (hope that makes sense - essentially it should have a jaw like a bulldog or a parrot). Ask if they will be sold insured, wormed and check if any vaccinations will have been given. Ask if the labrador parent was hip scored and if so what was the score. These are a few basic things that any good breeder or any seller of puppies should have covered.

May be worth your friend having a look at the Labradoodletrust site and it's associated forum doodletimes - www.doodletimes.org.uk - I think. They will have a whole host of helpful information about labradoodles including medical conditions they're prone to and what to look out for. From memory when we got our doodle we saw hip and elbow scores and a clear eye certificate - pva (?) . We also saw mum and dad and our pup came with a month's pet insurance, was microchipped, wormed and had had her 1st vaccination. Almost forgot - Doodlepost is another forum for doodle owners, haven't used it for a while, but they did allow what they considered were "approved" breeders to advertise their pups. If your friend is willing to consider a rescue doodle again www.labradoodletrust.com is a good place to start. Hope this helps.

Edited to say - allow yourself to be tempted, doodles are lovely if a little loony :D
