Angie
My Frizzle orp bantam has been pre occupied with the nest box for the last three days. I check for eggs 2-3 times a day as all 3 girls started laying in Jan for first time and remove the eggs. Frazz has been sat in the nest box all night . She comes out of the cube when the door is opened in the morning, but soon goes back in. I will go and turf her out and she stays out for a while but returns to the nest and will sit on the other girls egg practically as soon as it is laid. I am assuming she is Broody. How do i snap her out of it ? ....She hasn't laid for 3 days, should i worry about this ? I am turfing her out and scattering her food and she will eat off the ground so i know she is eating, but as soon as it has gone she goes back in. I turf her out before bed time and she usually goes for a good drink. So she has fluids. Should i shut her out on a morning for a few hours then open up for the other two to lay then shut her out again? Info please.
chick wiggle
Oh dear, does she grumble when you try to take her out, and when you put her down does she spread out like a pancake? If so, then yes, it sounds like she is broody There are several ways to try and snap her out of it one of which includes dunking her in water i think the preferred way and the way i do it is to pop her into a broody cage. We usually use a dog crate, it has to have a wired bottom so air can circulate and cool her down and also so she cant get comfortable and still brood. You can attach galley cups for food and water. She has to stay in there for 3 days and 3 nights! It is horrible for us to watch and i always feel so mean doing it but its better than them staying broody for 3/4 weeks! Good Luck
Angie
Frazz does grumble at me terrible and she tries to get low down in the nest as i try to get my hands under her to move her, not pecked me yet but cross. I have gone out frequently today to keep her out as much as possible , and tonight i have blocked the nest box up much to her disgust, but she is with the other two. I am leaving the pop hole open tonight as it is due to be cold , and for the next few nights into minus figures ( they are in WIR.) I will sort out dog cage and get it ready for the cold shoulder treatment. Thank you for your advice TY.
coco
The quicker you can snap her out of it the better, the longer they are broody the more determined they become. One of mine was broody for 3 months.
