HappyhenSG
A neighbour of mine takes in unwanted pets and currently is looking to re-home a 9 week old Westie puppy diagnosed with a grade 5 heart murmur I would love to take her but am concerned about how much it might cost in treatment. I dont have a bottomless pit for a bank account unfortunately, and wouldnt want to commit to something I couldnt afford to continue. I have contacted my (avian) vet who also has a cardiology unit for small furries and am awaiting a response. In the meantime, does anyone here have any experience of this kind of thing and if so can you give me a rough idea of the cost of treatment. Eg, I could afford £30 a month or so for medication but cant stretch to £000s for an op. I know each case could vary but it would still be useful to have an idea. chick wiggle
Is it too late to get pet insurance? I have the pet plan life policy, which covers any ailments for life, which is about £20 a month, but as the puppy already has the condition, im not sure it will apply Awww, i hope it works out for you, and the poor little puppy too
Chucky Mama
If this puppy truly has a grade 5 is a significant murmur which will almost certainly result in a huge bill, possible surgery and a disabled dog. It may sound harsh but I would advise you not to rehome this puppy. Specialist diagnosis itself will cost in excess of £500 - this is before any treatment. No insurance company would cover this puppy.
