beckyfitz
So I know the definitive answer will be 'wait & see' but thought you all might have some experience. My 3 lovely chicks are 2 weeks tomorrow, their combs are all the same tiny little bumps at the moment, BUT... 2 of them have really feathered up in the wing & tail department and one has hardly any feathers on the wings and no tail. So I'm thinking 2 girls and a boy? The less feathered one is also the most flighty when handled (probably means nothing!), and I have tried waving an arm over their box to see which ones crouch... they all do! Think this has more to do with them being little chicks though than male or female Anyway, just thought I'd explore your thoughts, the 2 definitely look different from the other 1 Becky x
Redwing
crouching is linked to maturity so that wont help i am afraid females do tend to feather up quickest with the boys feathering up well on wings and tail given time but not on their backs - this is quite general and there are some breeds that develop completely different to this The size of the comb is a reasonable bet but of course that depend on what type of comb they will have as an adult, the colour of the comb is a slightly better bet What breed are they? beckyfitz
I will try to post pics but haven't done it before. They are all Hybrids - Daddy is a Welsummer/Sussex. I have two with feathered legs who are both from mummy partridge Cochin - one looks partridge, the other either white or light buff (He's the one I think is a boy). The third chickie is either from a mummy Orpington or mummy Sussex, gingery & well feathered. Of the two that are Welsummer/Sussex x Cochin, one is well feathered & the other not so I'm drawn to believe the difference is a sex thing rather than a breed as they are siblings? Who knows? I've been playing this guessing game since they hatched & suspect it'll carry on for a few weeks yet! They are all cuties & going to visit DS2 class tomorrow afternoon Becky x
