Fertilized Eggs?

Recommended Posts

Hello all!

I now have a incubator, but a slight problem, I have fourteen Pekin girls in with a Pekin cockerel, surely he can't make them all fertile. He does mate with them occasionally, but I'm not around (because of school) to see whether or not he's actually mating with them in the day..

He can't seem to catch the girls.. And goes for the big Hybrids and LIGHT SUSSEX :lol:

I've tried seperating him with a few, but he just ignores them and trys to 'escape'.. :?

Any idea on what i should do, or should i just buy some fertile eggs? Seems stupid that i have to buy fertile eggs when i brought a cockerel for breeding.:wall:

Wouldn't really be the same, as i wanted to hatch from Bruno. :eh:

Thanks. :)

I have the same problem, Freckles is in with my 7 girls and don't particularly want eggs from any of them :| He seems to tread whoever he can catch  I am collecting him 2 wives of his own on Saturday and they will all live together in the shed. Try separating him again with a couple at the weekend when you are around to settle him :D

Someone with more experience will probably have better ideas and congratulations on your incubator, hope you enjoyed your Birthday

Potentially he can make the eggs of all 14 pekins fertile

Chances are he is certainly treading them all

Do you want to hatch only the Pekins? their eggs should be easy to recognise amongst the large girls eggs surely?

An alternative if you cant pen him separately would be to separate a few of the girls for a few days and collect their eggs, they will stay fertile for a while after being separated from the cockerel - probably a couple of weeks

If you do that and they arent fertile you'll really have no choice but to separate a small breeding group out
