Couperman
A lot of people including us, use horse bedding (EasiBed+) which is basically finely chipped pine that is treated to repel flies. Another option is to use Hemcore or Aubuoise which is a similar product but it is made from hemp straw. The latter will compost quicker but is lighter and can blow about a bit in my experience. (It can get really windy here mind). I wouldn't recommend bark chippings as they can harbour harmful mould spores and tend to go a bit slimy when wet. I think hardwood chippings would take an age to compost down and would probably be more expensive too. Hope this helps, Kev.
Chickybaby
I just put my used hardwood chips onto the flower beds in my garden. I do get grass etc coming up from the food/corn I've feed them in the past but I find, between the chickens and wild birds, it soon disappears.
