samfiddle
Advice please soon! I have 2 hyrids (one not laying about 21 wks, other about 30 wks) Yesterday bought 2 new hens: a plymouth rock 19 weeks and a sussex hybrid ( younger) from different flocks. I separated the new ones but the Plymouth is now pecking the younger Sussex and it has gone into hiding in the cube (the original hens are out free ranging) So... i have now taken the Plymouth Rock out of the cube/run and put it into a separate dog cage. Don't know what to do as the Sussex is still not keen to come out even though on its own, i have put it in the run but it just goes back into the cube. I just don't know if i am confusing them more
Tweety
How old is the Sussex? Is she injured? If she is uninjured, I would put your 2 new girls back together but separate from your old girls, and keep an eye on them. They are sorting out their pecking order and, as long as no blood is drawn, they should settle down. They are very new to you, and in my experience new chickens do tend to hide for the first couple of days. Just give them some time and make sure that the Sussex can get to eat and drink. There is some excellent advice on the forum about introductions, and I would suggest that you read it if you haven't already done so. It has worked every time for me. Good luck! Purplemaniacs
How much younger is the Sussex? Chrissie
samfiddle
Thanks The Sussex looks the youngest, no comb so i'm guessing 16-20 weeks. They are sleeping together okay The first time you introduce new hens is quite a stressful experience! Thank you for that advice, Sam
Tweety
Hi Sam, Yes, it is very stressful! Have a look in the FAQs about chickens - there is lots of information about the best way to make introductions. I hope it all settles down soon.
