Each morning I check the nest box while I'm poo picking & I've noticed that there is often lots of poo in the nest area. Is this normal ? I thought maybe they'd not like to poo where they lay their eggs ?

 

I did wonder if its because they seem to sleep in there rather than on the perches.

 

(its just like when you have kids isn't it ? Lots of poo conversations !!)

Entirely normal I'm afraid...You could try blocking the gap between roosting & nesting areas...or put something in the nest at bedtime but it's probably easier to do a morning poo pick.

My young 'un are sleeping and pooing in the laying area at the moment. Annoying thought it is they are giving the older girls a bit of a wide berth and hopefully they will stop when they are more relaxed and are laying.

It depends on the hen - some don't poo on the nest, some do.

 

We've got one hen (Troy) who poos so much overnight, that out of the 3 girls currently in the cube, two grab a nest position each, and poor Troy's front half is allowed in the nesting box, but her backside always has to stick out over the droppings tray. Presumably the other hens must have told her to do this!
