tortoise nails

Recommended Posts

hi,

does anyone have any advice about clipping tortoises nails?

can i do it myself or do i need to go to a vet?

is there anything that i can put in his pen to file his nails down, ie a rock he can climb on, or is there some sort of animal sandpaper that he can walk on? (i know that sounds a bit mad but i know what i mean!!!!)

thanks in advance for any help.

I think to keep a tortoise's nails short it would need to be kept on a hard surface permanently. We have plenty of hard surfaces in our garden but the tortoise just trundles up and down the grass all the time and consequently has long nails. I went to Jersey zoo with my mum a few years ago and they have a tortoise pen there. They are kept on a completely hard surface and all the tortoises have beautifully short nails

I have no idea re vet. You could probably phone and ask if they can trim the nails. We have never investigated with ours.

Are they overly long and/or causing a problem? If not I would leave them. If they are a problem you could 'nibble' the end off using dog nail clippers. Only take a little off though as the 'quick' will be nigh on impossible to see and you could have blood everywhere if you catch it. Any vet will be able to cut them for you. Our tortoise has never had his nails clipped (in 40 odd years).
