dixie chick
Mrs Moss - the Buff Orp - is very broody. For the last few days she has been burying herself in the corner of the stable, all puffed up and chirruping away to herself. She laid an egg yesterday and today, which I promptly removed from underneath her - and I keep picking her up and putting her outside with the others, but she would keep returning to her cosy corner, even when I put various obstacles in the way. So this afternoon I commandeered the dog crate, put it up on some bricks in the WIR and placed Mrs Moss inside, with food and water.... But I felt so mean and she looked so uncomfortable that after an hour I let her out .... Then, I had an offer of some fertile Buff Orp eggs that she could hatch. I am now in a dilemma! I have the space... I can afford the extra food. I have a dog crate to protect the chicks from the big girls .... What should I do ?
Egluntyne
She might not be totally committed to broodiness if she is still laying eggs. I'd wait for a few days, if you do decide to hatch, to see how she goes.
dixie chick
Thanks Eglutyne - I did not realise that they stopped laying eggs when they were broody - ( although the egg that I removed today might have been laid by one of the others as a couple of them lay in that spot) So - if I keep putting her outside and generally bothering her, is it possible that I can distract her from broodiness? Egluntyne
I'd go straight for the broody cage if you want to snap her out of it. It works quickly if you don't waver.
