lougarbard
I have been toying with the idea of buying a small incy for a while, just to do a few eggs for me and maybe a friend. But someone has offered to lend me a much larger one, so I was wondering if it is worth doing more and selling some day olds? Do people buy day olds as readily as P.O.L ?? And then , how on earth, would I decide what to get, I would also hatch some of my own (well, if they were fertile!) Any opinions?? Redwing
People wont buy day old chicks really, they have to pay out for a brooder etc.. then keep them somewhere until they can go outside then deal with the boys. At about 14 weeks plus they have more chance of finding homes Also people are impatient and want eggs sooner rather than later! I know its stating the obvious but bear in mind that a bigger hatch calls for a bigger brooder and nursery facilities then housing and runs later on. I have about 40 chicks at the moment (I breed to show so will keep the cockerels as well as the hens) and know that in a couple of months time I will need 40sqm of run space for that little lot and chicks are still hatching!! craftyhunnypie
Well said Redwing! I also breed & keep nearly all my cockerels. I breed to keep the frizzle gene going & to develop the best out of certain breeds I keep. You do have to have plenty of space & arrangement for so many chicks. Most people do prefer to buy their youngsters 'off heat' & preferably sexed. Once sexed, you can often sell trios & quartets to people who do require a cockerel for breeding. But you can be left with a lot. I tend to just hatch a few for my own needs unless I have space vacant for brooding & the nursery. I think I'd just hatch a few. Hatching eggs are a better bet than selling day olds. Emma.x
