lougarbard
I went to a poultry auction yesterday, just to have a look really, never been to one before, so just thought it would make an interesting morning out!! Err, anyway, i came home with 4 little quail! I know lots of people dont reccomend buying from an auction, but I got a bit carried away, and they are so cute! They look very clean and healthy. The notice said they were 'Pied quail', can anyone tell me more? Is this a colouring type of a particular type? They are very small, Tennis ball ish sized body. I have no idea how many are boy / girl, but there is def one boy, cos he is doing his 'thing'!! Or what age. Will this type lay eggs? They are in a cat box at the moment, we will be making a walk in seperate extension onto our chicken run tomorrow. I have read through lots of other posts, so have gained lots of useful information. But if anyone can help with anything asked above that would be great. Thanks.

beach chick
The notice said they were 'Pied quail', can anyone tell me more? Is this a colouring type of a particular type? - I've got some of this type of colouring and some more white. as far as I know, it's just a colouring thing and not a different breed. They are very small, Tennis ball ish sized body. - they will get a bit bigger, but not much. I have no idea how many are boy / girl, but there is def one boy, cos he is doing his 'thing'!! Or what age. Will this type lay eggs? - $64 million question!!! my quail (10 in all) are useless layers and I have no idea why. other than that, I would say keep a very careful eye on them for pecking etc - they are a lot more vicious than they look, I've got one in isolation at the moment who I think has lost an eye... also the males are quite vigorous, so the girls may end up with bald spots on the neck - in my experience though this is quite different from actual fighting, where they really do seem to go for the head and the eyes. the gender ratio seems to be what matters, so if you've got 1 boy and 3 girls I would say that's ideal. unfortunately quail are not the easiest birds to sex as far as I can tell anyway. hope that helps a bit!
