Looking after chickens in an organic way

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know of a list of products such as feed, tonics, wormers etc that are organic ? I'd like to keep my lot as organic as possible but I'm getting confused with all the different products. I'm looking really for something that will aid sloppy poos - I'm wondering if the chickens are getting stressed by the kids playing & DH hammering at my new raised beds !

bokashi bran mixed in their feed is good for firming up poos and settling tummies organically. Apple Cider Vinegar (proper stuff with the 'mother' in it) is available organically and it's great for adding to their water to keep the ph right as well as all sorts of other health-giving claims. You can get lots of organic feeds and mixed corn too.

the only aspect of organic-rearing that i wouldn't go near is with wormers, lice and red mite treatments - i've tried Verm-x and while is may have it's uses to keep worms at bay (although even this is debatable) it won't get rid of worms once they've got them; all lice powders have got some insecticide of some sort (although there's an argument that the lice are more worrysome to us than the chooks); but red mite - if you get it - can kill your chooks so treating them and the house they live in is essential. For all these aspects of chook keeping i rely on Flubenvet and Eprinex absolutely.
