brambles
My lovely cochin has become an evil pancake although she's allowing me to lift her out and will potter with the rest of the flock. I've got a holiday planned in 2 weeks, husband may be at home or with us due to work. My sensible head is saying to delay and if she's still got tendencies to sit her when we return. How much care will she need, assuming I can get her to sit? I have an empty eglu and can sort out a chick kit. How do I get her started once I've decided to go with the nesting flow?! I'll be hatching for a friend who has a greatly diminished flock due to the fox, but still has fertile eggs.
Griffin
I guess it depends on if she's done it before or not. I know with the three broodies I use they're all very good at getting off the nest every day and I probably would leave them on eggs while I was away because I know they'd look after themselves but if it were a first timer I wouldn't be so brave. brambles
Now that I have sorted a hen sitter to make sure she eats and drinks she's off the nest and back to normal after 3 days of broody. Little minx.

brambles
... She sorted herself, sat tight and our hen sitter did well. It's about day 18 now, we're waiting!

lougarbard
I have a similar quandry!! I have got chicks due to hatch in a few days, but had pre planned a 3 day camping trip not many days later. How old can the chicks be (with mum) before i could dare leave them unattended by me (daughter will be here to top up feed).??? I am thinking I should cancel the camping, any suggestions appreciated.
