sleepymummy
I have been keeping an eye on my 3 year old Marsha as she seemed to becoming a very fat old lady. I handled her a week ago - she's not keen usually. She seemed ok. I picked her up today as she was sitting looking very misbo. Her breast bone is very pronounced and her bum looks very swollen. She is waddling like a duck. Her comb is perky and red. Any ideas? Not having much luck lately. Had to have Betty put down last week due to incurable prolapse. Any help gratefully recieved. Egluntyne
Sounds like peritonitis I'm afraid. I'd ask a vet to look her over.
sleepymummy
I feel awful. i've been having a joke with the children about our "fat old lady" but she is quite clearly unwell. She looks awful this afternoon. Her back end looks more swollen than ever. Awkward being a weekend. I think I'll have to see how she gets on over night, if she makes it and if so, I'll take her the the emergency place in the morning. Oh, feel so guilty. Ain't Nobody Here
Don't feel guilty, it's so easy to miss things and they are good at hiding ailments . I hope she's OK tomorrow and you manage to get her seen to .
sleepymummy
She looked absolutely appalling this morning. I was sorry she didn't slip away during the night really. We had her quickly "despatched" this morning. Poor old girl. Doris, who is normally very brave and bolshy is very jumpy but she has lost 2 chums in 2 weeks. I am going to get some more tomorrow to keep her company. We have just built a lovely new walk-in run and it needs more residents! Thanks for the help. I still feel awful that I didn't spot it sooner but she was 3, had stopped laying after 2 1/2 years of laying 90g+ almost with no breaks and had had a fantastic time being queen of our garden! (That read dreadfully! I meant 90g+ eggs with almost no rest - not breaks in her shell!!)
Tara.F
ahh. We've just had Boudicca despatched this evening for exactly the same symptoms. She didn't get fat but started waddling like a duck and getting mucky feathers. We gave a warm bath and a blow dry, fed her rinsed tuna and some oil (which she scoffed down) and as she was still pottering about, eating and drinking as normal we waited....probably a mistake. Today she started hunching and her underside felt swollen and squishy. We took her to our chicken supplier/friend who said there was no hope and did the the deed. So we came home with a welsummer, a light sussex and five hatching eggs to cheer ourselves up (3 lemon sebrights and 2 orpington bantams)
