Tweety
Overnight the humidity in the incy has gone down to 46, and I am not sure what to do. I could put some more water in the reservoirs, but would opening the incy at such a late stage cause more problems than the extra water would solve? The vent is open about one third, as per instructions, and I daren't close it completely. Any advice please?
Pekin
Don't panic, its not a disaster. You could try shutting the vent just a smidgeon more or raise the humidity in the room the bator is in, by placing a bowl of hot water by the bator or boiling a kettle in it (in the room not in the bator ). craftyhunnypie
I know of a game keeper that drops cotton wool balls that have been soaked in hot water & squeezed out, into his incys on hatch day. Emma.x
Tweety
Thanks Pekin and chp. I never thought of raising the humidity in the room, so will try that first as am loathe to open the incy at this late stage. If that doesn't work, cotton wool balls it is! Pekin
Good luck, let us know if it works.
Tweety
Humidity now at 52, with 2 bowls of hot water in the room, so hope that will do the trick. I'll keep you posted!
Redwing
dont worry if you open the inccy to raise the humidity if its a little low, I soak kitchen roll in warm water, squeeze the worst of the water out, open the side just a crack and pop it down the side quickly. the cotton wool balls sound like a great alternative
Tweety
Thanks Redwing. At the moment I am refilling a bowl with boiling water every couple of hours, and the humidity is staying between 49 and 52. Do you think this will be ok, or should I put some kitchen roll/cotton wool balls in the incy?
Redwing
the trouble is that you cant keep the room humidity as steady as the inccy especially over night, I'd pop some damop kitchen roll in now, alternatively pour water in the channels through the holes in the tray, if the humidity was higher i'd say leave it but with very dry warm weather forecast its worth opening the inccy
Tweety
Will do. I was a bit worried about the humidity dropping further overnight, so hopefully this will keep it steady until the chicks have hatched.
Tweety
I've poured some water into the reservoirs, and the humidity is now 64 with the vent fully open. Shall I leave it like that, or does the humidity need to be higher or lower? A couple of the eggs are moving around now!
Redwing
Leave it like that, the humidity will drop and steady a little, close the vent a bit if it drops too low More importantly dont panic! x
Tweety
Panic over - for the time being, anyway! It has dropped to 63, and I have closed the vent just a little to try to keep it at that level. I'll check on it again before I go to bed, although I don't think I will get much sleep tonight. As always, many thanks for all the help.
