Limping duck

Recommended Posts

Today my little runner looks a bit sorry for herself and is limping. I can't see any obvious problems with her foot or leg like swelling but haven't examined her closely yet.

I no longer have an excellent duck vet and had extreme difficulty getting a vet to see one of my chooks last time, so know this would be a problem.

My plan is to get her in the house and put her in the bath to thoroughly clean her foot, try & examine her & spray the offending leg with purple spary. I have some Metacam (anti-inflammatory) prescribed for one of my ducks previously & think I will start her on this if the foot/leg isn't obviously infected?

If it is infected she will need antibiotics, I don't really know how to go about this - should I phone the vet, explain there is probably a need for antibiotics ask if they will see her & prescribe? Should I suggest Baytril or will they not like being told what to do?? Last time I just kept getting the brick wall 'the vet doesn't see poultry at all'

I'm hoping to be able to deal with it at home if at all possible.

Any eperience of limping ducks? She had still laid an egg this morning :-)

One of my runners became lame, and with assistance of hubby managed to catch her to inspect her feet. Initially I thought there was nothing there, but as I ran the edge of my nail over her underside of toes I caught it on a ridge. As I moved the nail again, there was a thorn deeply embedded almost to the hilt. I managed to grip it and pull it out, it left quite a crater. Miss Runner went off toddling again quite happily and has had no problems since. It did not even stop her laying eggs!

She is currently in my bath :)

Thought the nice clean & deep water will help her leg since they only have splash pools in the run.

Have examined her foot & leg before the bath, doesn't feel particularly hot, no swelling & can't see any injuries, but might see clearer after the bath.

Decided not to self-treat as have managed to find a vet to see her - woohoo  !

Better safe than sorry. Its been so difficult in the past to find a vet that its such a relief to find one.

Thanks for your advice, I'll let you know what happens
