Best liner/ bedding for drop tray

Ahhh !!! the first of this years lettuce eaten today, lots more to go at, Flat leaf parsley that easily survived the winter is out of control, way too much to eat, chives gone mad too, tarragon ready also, strawberries doing great (not ready yet), red onions, garlic and shallots doing well and loads of seedlings on the go (tomatos, aubergine,cucumber,peppers more herbs). You got to get a Poly-tunnel they are the business Oh and little junior chick is doing fine (only got the 1 ) Sandy is a great mum really looking after (her, fingers crossed) very well

We've had no rain for over a month (literally, none, nada, rain gauge completely dry). Waterbutt is empty. Garden is parched. No veg planted out yet - it's easier to water things in pots - but as a result things are getting straggly...

 

The weather has been lovely, but to quote a song "along with the sunshine, you need a little rain sometimes..."

No rain here either...in fact I can't remember the last time in rained,apart from a few spits

I am watering twice a day. An entire row of carrots has failed to germinate, & other seeds are suffering too.

The ones that are really enjoying the weather are my greenhouse crops......the toms are looking great,as are the Q's,Peppers & salads.

 

The ground NEEDS a darn good drenching & soon!

I'm away for 4 - 5 days next week & really worried about my plants. I have stuff in the greenhouse, stuff in my cold frame & a couple or so pots with summer bulbs in outside. I'm thinking of leaving the cold frame partially open - so it gets a waft. Don't know what to do about the greenhouse - leave door slightly open? What worries me is the watering. I just can't rely on the chicken sitters. They let my plants die always - but do the chickens superbly.

So any tips for keeping their soil sufficiently moist?

I have my grow bags or potting on pots sat in special shallow trays - you could leave some water in them maybe?

Or use that matting stuff.

My greenhouse door has been open day & night for a good fortnight now.

Most of my pots are sat in trays with a bit of water. Yes I think some of that matting would be a good idea. Wilkos..Pound shop?

Our peppers don't want to grow this year I don't think
