Hen opening beak really wide

Recommended Posts

Butternut, my Rhody Hybrid hen, has started opening her beak really wide. I think it's something called "Gapeworm?"

All of my hens, including her, have always done this very occasionally, but now Butternut seems to be doing it a bit more often, and several times in a row.

Does anyone have any ideas on what it is, and how to cure it :)

Thanks Millions :D

she might just be rearranging the food in her crop. Mine do it a fair bit.

If it's gapeworm then they will be coughing and shaking their head (trying to dislodge the worms) and if you hold her beak open and shine a torch down, you should be able to see thread like worms attahed to her gullet.

If you haven't wormed them for 3 or 4 months then it's a good idea to give them a dose of flubenvet which will also kill gapeworm.
