Eggasperated
Is there such a thing as a semi-broody hen? Fearne has taken to getting up, having some breakfast then retiring to the nest box for the entire morning . While she's in there she screeches at anyone getting near her (including me) and fluffs herself right out, if I'm actually brave enough to look she will usually have laid an egg in the first hour she's in there but doesn't come out for about 6 hours. Around about lunchtime she will suddenly emerge as if nothing is wrong and spend the rest of the day as normal, only to repeat this pattern the next day. I keep thinking she going broody then she reverts to normal behaviour. What's going on? Or is she just as confused as I am
Sam
I had a semi-broody! Well... I still do Shes back to laying now, so I just put a plant pot in the nest box at night so she can't sleep in there and it seems to have done the trick... I'm not sure if its coincidence or not but its got her laying again. She was sitting in the nest box before bed time again, so I picked her out (she growled!) and put the plant pot in so she had to roost. It seemed cruel putting her in a broody cage because she still spent the majority of the day free ranging.
bouldercroft
Rita is semi-broody too - she lays an egg sits on it for an hour or so and if I'm home I just throw her out of the and then she goes about her normal day - usually to a nice sunbathing spot. I think she's conflicted between being a mum and topping up her tan And if I'm at work then I can rely on Josie to bully her out of the - she really is a total madam...
