Ammonia smell in coop-first time owner

Hey all,

I've recently started wondering about registering with DEFRA, but I'm not too sure whether I have to or not. At the moment I have about 20 birds as my permanent breeding stock, but after lots of hatching and regular trips to auction, I often have a number of birds very close to 50 (which I think is the number when you have to register)

Should I be thinking about this, or am I too small scale?

It is my understanding that as long as the amount is below 50 Defra are not required to be notified.

 

I asked this same question when I got my two ladies and the answer was as above from a number of breeders and live stock owners.

 

Just keep below 50 and you are small scale.

If for a small part of the year you go above 50 but then dip down pretty quickly again you should be fine with not registering

Is registering something to be avoided or does it have some benefits? (Sorry for the thread mini hijack).

It supposedly has benefits in the form of greater information in the case of disease outbreaks

 

Many people who had flocks during the last AI scare beg to differ and others see it as 'Big Brother' compiling information on their flocks. Some people who sell chickens see it as a way of reassuring buyers of good husbandary practices though thats not what registration means

 

Personally I am registered and it causes me no more hassle than a form to fill in once or twice a year.
