peckingham palace
We've only had chickens for 6 weeks and one of our gingernut rangers has gone broody. I try to keep her out of the nest box of the cube as much as possible, but its tricky when the other 8 need access to lay. Do I need to get a crate to separate her. Sorry, am sure this topic has been covered before, but this is all new to me. Any advice would be much appreciated please. In the guide to keeping chickens that came with the cube it suggests dunking her in cold water, but I'm really not keen on doing this as it seems a bit unfair when its her natural instinct. Thanks for looking at this post.
JillM
I thought hybrids were supposed to be fairly reliable, but after my Pepperpot went broody and hatched some eggs for me, now one of my gingernuts has gone broody too. I shall have to buy a dogcrate to keep her in if this keeps up! Good luck with yours
Mollie333
If you don't plan to hatch from her, stopping her from being broody is better, as they can loose condition. *Click* Heres some information. Good luck.
peckingham palace
Many thanks for taking the trouble to answer my post. I have put a bag of ice under her this morning as a first ditch attempt and will see how she gets on. Was getting quite worried about her as she has lost feathers from her tum and despite our efforts she doesn't seem to be eating any great amount. Will keep you posted on progress. Thanks again
Mollie333
Wouldn't worry about the lack of feathers, they pluck them out themselves to get direct heat to the eggs, she wont eat a lot either, best thing to do is pick her up and put her out to ensure she's getting food and water, then she'll go and sit on the cold nest again. peckingham palace
Thanks for your advice, I put bags of ice cubes in the nest box which seem to have cured her as she is not keen to be inside today. However, now one of my Miss Pepperpots have decided to jump on the band wagon !! Ha ha, thanks to you all I know how to nip this in the bud. Thanks again, this forum is invaluable for us newbies. xx
