poorly chicken

Recommended Posts

Any ideas please One of my girls is poorly,. She is approx 3 yrs old. She is very lethargic and will not eat just standing or laying still.

She has a squishy crop and brought back fluid when I massaged the crop so have done this twice. I tried live yopghurt and she has ACV in her drinking water. I have taken her to the vet (2) and at £40 a go OH not too keen to go again. She is on antibiotics which I syringe down her and I am also syringing water down her. She has today pooped a few very bright yolky yellow stools very watery and I am wondering if she has a broken egg inside. I have put her in a warm bath and massarged the vent are could not feel anything. She has been like this since Friday. Would love to know if I am missing anything or anything else I can do thanks

I wondered about a broken egg as I read your post or a gut problem slowing everything down. May be worth running it past the vets, perhaps ring. :? Someone highlighted recently that a lot of sourcrop problems are actually due to sluggish gut from abdominal problems.

You could feel inside for a broken egg, if you use a lubricated gloved finger and feel inside and hook anything out carefully. I've had to do this with my gingernut a few times with good results. As your girl's on antibiotic cover, she'll be protected but still be thorough with hygiene.

It sounds like sour crop, with the squishy crop and bringing up liquid, as couple of mine have had this over the years, does it feel like the crop is full of liquid? and does it smell when you open her beak?

Mine went very quiet and would go sit themselves in a corner or on a perch, and would stop eating. Have you tipped her foward and upside down and massages all the fluid out of her crop? you may need to do this for a few days and the yogurt is good, mix soon garlic in with as its anit fungel.

Good Luck xx

Yes I do think she has sour crop and have massarged and tipped her up and clear fluid has come out (does not smell). She is on antibiotics but I was worried about the yolky yellow watery poop and wondered if she has a broken egg inside. Although I gave her a warm bath I only did it for about 10mins perhaps not long enough and will do longer tomorrow. Thanks for replies

if the egg has broken inside I don't the the warm water will help I think thats for if the eggs still whole so she relaxes and passed it through? You may have to stick a finger up in her vent, if the eggs cracked you'll have to gently pull the shell out or she'll get an infection, does her vent look red and swollen? The vet should of been able to feel if an egg was stuck though?

It can take a few days for sour crop to go, our took 3 days of tipping her up and feeding her yogurt and garlic to clear up, maybe try mashing soon boiled egg up, mine always seem to eat this even when there poorly!!!!!
