Hen Huggers R Us

Still Sad

Recommended Posts

After a posting for the first time in 12 months (or more) a few weeks back,It has took this long to bring myself to post again (very upset) I was quite happy to say things were going great,1 new hatch-ling and pondering what to grow in the poly tunnel. but disaster struck after losing over half of the girls to a mink some 6 months earlier, Mr fox came along and wiped out the rest, apart from new mum and chick that were separated, Hugh the cockerel seemed to put up a brave fight protecting his ladies but a fox is too much, it killed them all and took 1 for dinner, I don't yet know who was took I darn't ask Paul the landowner, (I don't want to know) who unfortunately has found both incidents as he lives on site, he heard nothing and it happened just before dusk. So we will restock in a few weeks(when the fox has hopefully moved on) and reinforce the fence where it found it's way in, I don't blame the fox really it probably has young somewhere and is just doing what they do, if it has asked he could have had one if he had spared the rest and gone away. so enough with sorrow, the strawberries are ready and taste great :) , don't seem to have as much time for growing this year because a new venture is taking more of my wife's time, I help her where I can and have less time for growing/prep time. so onward we go, look forward to getting new girls asap, does anyone know where we can get a "Sicilian Buttercup" she was one of our faves, laid small pure white eggs and despite her size was a good layer. bye for The Henhuggers

So sorry to hear that all your hens have gone :( - as you say, you can't blame the fox when they have young to feed, they are only doing what foxes do and they don't have the option of trotting along to Tescos (although I think some urban foxes do that as well)

I don't know what your fencing system is but we have a large enclosure surrounding separate pens for ours. The fencing is almost 6' high netting with a skirt at the bottom, facing outwards. The whole enclosure then has a single strand of electric wire attached to an Electric Shepherd energiser and a battery. We have not had any fox problems in the 5 years we've been here even though we have foxes around all the time. It is worth investing in a good system.

I do hope you manage to set up again and have hens to enjoy. I'm not sure whre to find the Sicilian Buttercup hen but if you ask in the Chickens section then I'm sure someone will know.

Good Luck with it all.
