International chicken keeping?!

Recommended Posts

Hi all, we might be moving to Spain soon - does anyone know if you are allowed to keep hens there and if there are any strange regulations? I thought I would ask you guys before I start trawling through the internet to find info as I have already spent most of the week trying to find out how you move dogs and cats to Spain

Hi Laura,

I love Spain, I'm very jealous!

Do you want to take yours with you or get hens when you're there? Taking them with you would be regulated nationally, but rules on keeping them are probably more local - Spain is such an interesting collection of regions (often with strong local pride, culture, and laws!) and I'd be very surprised if they didn't have their own by-laws (or Spanish equivalent).

Just my two cents worth, as I don't have any direct experience. I do know that there are lots of bloggers who are now living the good life (gardening, hen-keeping, smallholding etc) in Spain, so I'm sure there will be a wealth of info out there if/when you need to find it.

Good luck with your move!

Jen

Hi Jen,

I don't think we could take the hens with us, it is already going to cost a small fortune to move the dogs and cat out there, but I would love to get some once we are settled as I will miss ours

I agree that Spain will probably have some very strange regulations - I don't want to get shouted at by the Spanish version of the county council!

I think moving them would be the issue rather then keeping them. I had a friend whose mother lived in Andulucia and had a small business selling free range eggs and chickens. That was most unusual there as most eggs and chickens are battery reared I think.

Let us know how you get on. We're just off there for hols at the end of the week so if I find anything out I'll let you know when we get back!

Thank you! I hope you have a lovely holiday.

I have to say our vets (Companion Care) are being so helpful - they have written us a list of everything we need to do for the dogs and cat, when it needs to be done and what we need to when we are out in Spain to ensure that we could bring them back to UK immediatly if we had to.
