Our current ones are performing egg-laying duties quite well enough, so we are now thinking about variety rather than performance, and would like a couple of pure breeds - Welsummer and Wyandotte seem to be featuring high on the list, but we're keeping pretty open minds. The problem, though, is finding trustworthy breeders in the area. We've used Golden Valley Poultry in Hindhead before and have done fine, but they don't seem to have the variety for this time round. We thought we'd found a good alternative when we were told about Perfect Poultry in Ligh"Ooops, word censored!"er, but then read the reviews and quickly backed away again. We've found a couple of others that appear to be OK, but for one reason or another have us wondering how much the owners really actually know about their trade. Trouble is that it's easy to find some poultry farms from an Internet search, but difficult to find all the rest that exist. It's then difficult to find objective opinions on how good any of these breeders are, since many reviews are from first-time buyers judging how they've been treated as customers rather than the quality and health of the birds they bought. Therefore, does anyone have any firm recommendations as to where to go to look at a range of pure breed hens? We're in the Surrey Hills and so far the closest likely possibility left is in Salisbury. We're looking at getting another couple of large fowl, but the run is easily big enough for a couple of bantams as well, and we were certainly discussing doing that.
