Last night I took the mum whose chicks are now 6 weeks and reintroduced her to the flock. Onion is not happy and is fluffed up like a turkey chasing her around poor girl. I am hoping that it will all settle down if not Onion will be going into solitary for a bit - if I can catch the slippery so and so, he is like lightening! The chicks seem ok without mum they were all perched on the side of the tray they had their bed in the Eglu, bless!

They've got such short memories haven't they! I've had the very best of friends not recognise each other after one has been on broody duty.

 

I've only had one broody this year (Mrs White) and she's bottom hen anyway so it's not going to be easy here. When it's time to separate the chicks into girls to keep and boys to raise for the freezer, I'm seriously considering keeping Mrs White with the girl chicks. Then when they're old enough to go in with the main bantam flock, I'll sneak Mrs White back in too. It's not easy is it!!

It all seems to be calming down Onion is leaving her alone, relative normality at the moment!

I was wondering about how to reintroduce Faye in a couple of weeks as the chicks will be six weeks old by then. I might just keep her in with the hopefully female chick and reintroduce them both when the chick is old enough. That or ust put her in at night and hope for the best.

That's what I did with Muppet and her chicks last year - she was still mothering them at 16 weeks when I merged them with the original flock. She's a bantam silkie and her babies were faverolles - didn't stop them trying to snuggle under her wings at night though.

I too am planning on keeping the chicks, but I will keep them separate whilst they are still on growers feed, can fit through the netting and are vunerable to bullying. Their mum seems happy to be back with the flock, she hasn't really looked for the chicks who are in the Eglu on the other side of the main runs netting. Very much out of sight put of mind!
