Help please...limping chicken

Recommended Posts

Hi

One of my girls, Matilda (she is a white sussex and about 1 year old, had been limping on her left leg, could see no damage, blood, redness and no heat or swellings. The next day she was limping less and the next was nearly back to normal. However today she is limping really badly again, and there is still no swelling, heat etc in the leg or anything else abnormal to report. She does tend to "fly" at the run which is surrounded with chicken wire so not sure if she hurt herself that way.

She also tears around the garden like a wild thing when I go to put them away from free ranging, I am wondering if she has hurt her leg that way. Tonight she is spending most of the time crouching down and pecking at at the ground around her, when she does move she limps badly.

Please can someone give me some idea as to what it may be, she is still laying, but tail area is down. Is rest the best option???

Thank you

I would restrict her wandering. Like you I would check for signs of inflamation swelling etc first. I understand an egg can press on the nerves and cause problems or is she showing any neurological sign. I think I would try giving her some extra calcium and cod liver oil and if not improving then I think the vet would help you diagnose her. :?
