sorry for being thick (!) - my friend's chicks have grit in a separate container but I'm sure I've read somewhere that it can be added to the feed.

 

What to people generally do?

Ermmm... i used to add grit to my pellets but found that my hens didnt really notice it as much. Also, chickens pick up alot of grit from foraging

Well I keep mine in separate dishes, mainly so that I know when it needs topping up and also it means if one of the girls is already eating pellets it isn't stopping the others having access to the grit. The way my mind works with the grit is that as it's heavy it could drop down to the bottom of the feeder and not get eaten, although I have no idea if that does happen as I've never mixed it in

I supply my grit separately in little galley pots. In my experience the amount of grit depends on how much they are able to get through free ranging. I hardly ever seem to top mine up, but they free range for nearly the whole day.

I don't mix the two, the grit would fall through to the bottom, mine free range but I do have grit pots too.
