A double yolk... so surprised!

Recommended Posts

Hello there,

We got our 2 girls two weeks ago and the Gingernut Ranger, Matilda, is now laying most days. We had one soft shelled egg on day 1 (weren't expecting that!). On day 12, we got an extra big egg - well done Matilda! - and to my surprise and disbelief, it had two yolks! Is this common in young chooks? I took a pic and I have posted it on my blog here: http://imgoinglocal.wordpress.com/2011/06/19/a-tale-of-two-chooks/

The other hen, Beryl, is a Miss Pepperpot and isn't laying yet. Her wattle and combs aren't very big yet so I'm assuming she's younger....

Nice to finally be a chicken keeper. They're trashing the lawn though so we're building a WIR as soon as we can :)

My dear girls got a fright early this morning by a fox trying to get into their run, after that one of them laid a very large soft shell egg. I decided that i should break it and it was a double yolker. She is a very old ex battery hen and its unusual for her to lay such large, soft or double yolked eggs. Is it because she is old or if is it because she got a scare. My other hen that is just over a year old has stopped laying for the last couple of days, could it be the heat or something else, any ideas?
