Moving House: Eglu in Flagged yard

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am new to this forum so hello every one!

We have 4 chickens which at the moment live pretty much free range. However a change in circumstances means we are moving to a house with only a Coronation Street style back yard with a hard floor.

If i get an extension and place the run on wood chippings will the girls be ok? Has anyone got pics of their hens living in a similar environment?

The Mrs thinks we need to get rid but i think they will be ok living in an extended eglu and run?

HELP PLEASE i want to keep my girls!

Hi

We had our new girls temporarily directly on the patio

Then my Husband made a base like this which is useful to move them

We used to use wood chips but have found Aubiose MUCH better. We change it every 3-4 weeks in the winter when it gets wetter and every 5-6 weeks in the summer.

The flags won't be a problem - quite a few people on here deliberately place their Eglu on slabs or pavers, as long as you have a thick layer of woodchip that they can scratch in, they'll be fine.

They will however kick the woodchip everywhere so you might want to create some sort of 'kick-board' - when I had an Eglu and run, I used green lawn edging fastened with cable ties.

How far is the run extended - is it the converter or the extension as well? Will you be able to let them out at all?

If you have no grass, you may want to consider adding some greens to their diet - cabbage, spinach, lettuce etc - I get a lot of gone-to-seed lettuces, seeded broccoli etc from my friend's allotment.

If it's a Coronation St style house, then the backyard has probably seen hens before some time in the last hundred years or so, especially during wartime!

thanks for the feed back so far! will show the mrs these comment so hopefuly we have saved the girls!!!! I haven't got an extension yet but probably will only have space to make it 3m total. will let them strech their wings on an evening and weekend in the yard.

I will probably make a trough from decking boards and then fill with wood chip. Will also put the kick board round.

Anymore pics of hens in back yards?

Thanks,

Josh
