Is it cruel to keep a chicken on it's own?

Recommended Posts

We lost Trinny last week, she was 3 and now suzannah is on her own and looking very lonely. I don't know what to do because I'm thinking of having abreak from keeping chickens and therefore don't want to try and introduce a youngster but don't like the thought of her being miserable. Is it cruel for her to be on her own?

all advice welcome!

Hi, I'm no expert but I think I would be quite lonely if all my friends had died!

How can you even think of taking a break from keeping chicken? Madness!

You have obviously had the Morehens vaccine!

I think you should get some more and post the pics as soon as!

They are flock creatures and don't like to be alone. I would either get some more of if you really have had enough try to find a new home for her. I know it can be hard to integrate just one hen into an existing flock but maybe someone who is starting out or who is getting some new hens could take her at the same time as they buy their new girls.

I agree too. I rehomed a lone hen some time ago, and was amazed how quickly and easily she integrated with my existing flock. She was clearly happy to be with other hens again so, sad though it will be for you, I think it is the kindest thing to do for her.
