Many apologies for not being about actively on the forum but since the beginning of May its been a bit hectic. My Dad's health isn't good, kidney & heart failure and parkinson's disease, he's been very poorly but has again pulled through. Mum's had emergency surgery on her knee after it locked getting in the car. I've been on a cruise to the Med, a trip down to Devon for a few days and then went to see Bon Jovi in concert. Between that the nursing home where Dad is have got four chooks, convinced them to get hybrids and they are lovely, a black rock, a bovans nera and two speckledies. They have had them for three weeks and they are very friendly. I've started catching them and when the residents are sitting outside I take them to them all so they can stroke them, its nice to see their faces light up (the residents not the chooks). Anyway, Morehens Disease has struck again and my hens free range round the garden and don't really use the outside run they have. They go into the run in the garage at nights. I've decided rather than have another empty run, it would be lovely to have a few more hens.... I'm trying to decide whether to go for hybrids again or have some pure breed hens, I quite fancy large fowl Wyandottes or Orpingtons. Am open to suggestions, and if anyone in the Essex area has any needing a good home, please get in touch!! Enjoy the rest of the sunshine. If you want something big, how about a couple of Jersey Giants? think they might be a bit too big, I'd like them all to free range together and if I go for pure breds I will be getting a cockrel so that I can raise some chicks. Not sure yet, Mum tells me to get hybrids.... But I'm not sure. I'm not fussy. I know I don't want bantums, I love them but we had them when we were kids and I like normal sized hens... if only Omlet had other hybrids I would order from them. migsy Posted July 6, 2011 Share Posted July 6, 2011 For hybrids I would recommend a Amber Star / Amber Link as mine is so laid back or maybe a Black Rock for strength and hardiness.
