straining hen

Recommended Posts

One of my ex batts is currently under the weather, we got her last August via the BHWT. This is the first time any one has been poorly. I am quite concerned as Poppy was showing signs of illness when we let the girls out of the run this morning. Poppy hasn't laid an egg in 2 days, I decided to bring both her and her nest box into the house this morning. Poppy is eating and drinking (lots) She is very quiet and is sat straining in the nest box. I have given her a warm bath and squirted some olive oil into her vent. I have also put a warm herb thing in the box with her (microwable thingy me bob). I have given her abdomen a good massage and apart from feeling warm , I cannot feel an egg. Can anyone advise please......xxxx

Just be a little careful about over heating her as it is generally quite warm at the moment and the heat pad may make her overly hot. She may have a softie on the way and they can take some time to pass. I had one that sat in the nestbox from 3pm until long past roosting time. If she seems 'comfortable' enough, I would sit tight but I wouldn't leave her beyond tomorrow morning. Offering her some wet mash (or soaked pellets) may encourage her to eat and take on board a little more fluid. Adding a little calcium & vitamin D3 may help in the longer term but wont be fast enough acting to help today. This is of course assuming that it is egg related :)

I know it sounds silly, but I only have 3 ex batts and each of them produces a different coloured egg to the other one, Hannah has very pale feathers and lays large pale egg, where as poppy is darker and lays smaller darker eggs and then thyme lays larger eggs than poppy. So I always know who's eggs are whose. Who would have thought it. lol
