chicken bark
My first time broody Summer (a hybrid) has successfully hatched an Ixworth chick. She hatched it on Thursday morning and the other eggs have not hatched (and are duds). So today I have been to Jody at RawGreenCottages and picked up a couple of day old chicks. I shall pop them under her this evening. Fingers crossed she will accept them. Anyone got any tips?
Redwing
Have a back up plan for if she doesnt accept them Its a tricky experience adding a chick, if you add them at night you arent there to keep an eye on things, if you add them in the day its trickier still If the broody is off the rest of the eggs and up and about with the lone chick it makes it harder as she is much more 'with it' and not in the broody trance mode - I tried and failed last week to add a chick in this situation and sadly the broody killed the chick - I should have known better really than to try this If the broody is still sat on the eggs then slip a couple from under her when you slip the chicks in and you may be ok
