poorly Daisy May

Recommended Posts

Daisy May is the last of my four ex battery hens to survive. Unfortunately she seems to be going exactly the same way as the other three. Very listless, sitting huddled up and when she does move walking very slowly. Her bottom is very dirty and I think she has had loose white poo (hard to tell as her and my two other chooks free range in the garden). She has not laid any eggs for over three weeks now. Her eggs have always had quite soft shells and were quite large. I have ordered some Davinova C which I will start giving her when it arrives. Any ideas what else to do?

Thanks - she is sitting huddled up and her tail is pointing down. She is still eating and occasionally takes a stroll around the garden but mostly she sits huddled up. Do you think the Davinova C will help if she has a soft shelled egg inside her?

If she has the symptoms of peritonitis you should either seek palliative treatment to make her feel a bit more comfortable if only short term, or you should consider culling her or having her PTS by a vet. Leaving her as she is is not a humane thing to do. They feel really horrible with it :(

Update on Daisy May! Have been giving her calcium supplement and she has greatly improved. Still sits huddled up occasionally but not as much. She is eating but now has diarrhoea. Took her to the vet today - vet feels she has an egg inside her but suggested I continue with the calcium as she has improved. She gave her antibiotics which I have to give her for seven days. Fingers crossed she makes it!!!!

Further update on Daisy May - I am pleased to say (although with fingers crossed) Daisy May is much improved. She actually laid an egg today - the first in about six or seven weeks! Well done my little chick!!! Hopefully she will keep improving. Really think she was low on calcium and once I gave her some calcium she improved!
