I'm in the process of decorating our hallway, Id like to keep the door handles to save some cash but they

are very tainted. Any tips on cleaning them up?

Good old Brasso. It's amazing how much crud it'll shift off.

 

Beware, though; any brass cleaner you use will remove any protective lacquer that was on there originally, so you'll need to either clean the brass regularly from that point onward or apply a new coat of lacquer, which you can normally get from a boat chandler.

I've left mine but then I quite like the old patina, and they are over 100 years old.

Ahh, I see. have they been lacquered then? New ones usually are.

They where tainted when we moved in so i guess the lacquer is wearing off.

I'll give the lacquer removal and cleaning a go. Hopefully the boatyard in Banbury will do the lacquer.
