What are these on my bird. They all have them. Are they red mites...We have seen reddish ones and grey coloured ones. Lots of them. How can we get rid of them and what are they and what can happen to our birds?

They look like lice to me. There are powders you can get or you can use frontline spray or xeno spot-0n (neither of which are licenced for chickens and have an egg withdrawal period but are very effective).

 

I think mites are smaller and usually live in the coop and feed from the birds just at night.

And where do i put the front line. We have lots of that. All over...or on their neck like we do with our cats?

Just about 5/6 squirts over each bird - try to get close to skin and then rub around a little - definitely do under wings and around the bottom

Chris - if that is a bantam poland, use one squirt under each wing; thats all they need because of their small size. Make sure it goes on the skin and make sure you use the squirty stuff, not the drops. They are too strong and can cause feather loss. As previously stated *not licensed for use on poultry*
