doctors girls
i am slightly because i read on one web site "down the lane" that you should not feed the hens oyster shell but one of my hens egg shell is not as hard as the other two i use the jondo mixed poultry grit and i was wondering should i add any limestone flour as a supplement for an extra boost but i know that too much calcium is not good for them i use spillers layers pellets and have been doing for the last 8 months with no problem but the hen in question is 13 month old and laid her first egg in december last year could it be that she is coming to the end of her first yearly cycle of eggs :? Daphne
Carry on with the mixed grit - they do need some form of soluble grit like oystershell to help form shells, as well as the hard flint grit to help with grinding up food. You could try limestone flour, although personally I have never found it to be much help so I don't bother with it now. As long as the hen seems happy and healthy I don't worry too much, although I wouldn't use a very thin shelled egg for incubation.
Redwing
If the hen is getting a quality layers pellet and mixed grit she should be getting enough calcium already, try adding a tiny drop of cod liver oil to their feed as this will help them absorb the calcium better
