Day 22 in the Little Chick House

Recommended Posts

Two more hatched early this morning. It's looking quite cramped in the incubator, with three chicks bumping around the two eggs that have not yet hatched.

The long interval - 12 hours - between hatch 1 and hatches 2/3 - raises another question. Please could I ask: if I move these three to the brooder tomorrow morning, two of them will then be 24 hours dry but the first one will be 36 hours dry, but will that be OK? Or should I take the first one out this evening and put it in the brooder? It already looks ready for its next adventure.

Also, should I give the remaining two eggs until Monday to hatch and then throw them away?

Thank you.

I took mine out as soon as they were dry putting them in the brooder one by one until they were all hatched. All hatched and all survived. :D

Triffic - thank you.

The one that hatched yesterday is bumbling about a lot - grooming itself, climbing on the others, experimentally pecking at their beaks - and I think the other two would appreciate some peace and quiet.

The three hatchlings are now in a large cardboard box with the Brinsea brooder, chick crumbs and a tiny dish of water with a few pebbles in it. Asleep now and quiet but were cheeping excitedly and darting about when I put the later-hatched two in with the first one.

The remaining two eggs show absolutely no sign of hatching. (I had six eggs to start with but dropped one when I was trying to candle it on the 8th day ...)

I am going to offer any cockerels to the local urban farm. I do hope these three are not all cockerels. I have girls' names all ready - Echo, Elodie, Eleanor ... but no boy's names.
