psicorman
Hi all, Im new to forum as just joined, ive bought myself 2 adult white ducks l=i think an Aylesbury duck. one of them when i go near it drops it head shakes it abit and makes like a grunt noise. Is that a scared or go away gesture or could it be somthing else. When should ducks also start laying as ive had them 2 weeks and they are already adult ones. Thanks for any help William Edited August 25, 2011 by Guest
Redwing
Hiya and welcome to the forum I'm not sure about the grunt noise, ducks arent usually very defensive over territory but geese are Regarding the eggs I have to ask the obvious - are you sure they are female? zoejames
Hi William! welcome This is interesting Firstly the easy bit.... they may not lay until they are 8 months old, it all depends on their breeding stock and what they have been bred for... where did you get them and how 'adult' are they? As for the grunting noise.... I need to ask a few questions. If it is a grunt whistle head up tail up display which is usually performed on water (see this video on youtube, about 40s into the video the males perform this behaviour: ) Your aylesburys grunt will sound more like a donkey noise and if it is performed on land it may be missing parts of the repertoire such as the whistle and the head up tail up bit. It is only males that perform this behaviour. The other behaviour it could be if the duck is female is 'inciting' behaviour. This is where the female puts her head down and back and make a sort of 'quegging' sound. She is basically saying back off my fella or back off me I have a fella. This could well be displayed to you or to another duck depending on how the ducks were raised/hatched. Feel free to message me if you have any more questions. I can post a video of inciting behaviour if that helps. Do you know they are both female? Do they both have the same quack? zo x
psicorman
Hi Zoe, You got it spot on its only the one that does it, i have 2 ducks and 6 chickens. The ducks are approx 6-7 months old, not sure how many they lay i was told around 150 a year. I will do a video clip and put it on my face book account maybe you can see it and then let me know if it is that behaviour Thanks William
