Fur 'n' Feathers
Mmmmmmh Koukoula hasn't laid since April but is only eighteen months old. She's recently been reintroduced from the sin bin for feather-pulling and is fine with the others. Still not laying. I wondered if she had peritonitis as it doesn't always show in the overall health initially. I have examined her abourt a month ago and couldn't feel anything. However, in the last 2 weeks I noticed she has a rather hard lump that can't be seen but can be felt if you palpate the area under the vent. It feels like a small solid lump that is oval. Not an egg... and tonight I think I felt one or two smaller ones near it. She's started a moult and isn't eating so much eith, but I picked her up tonight & she's definately not so heavy as she was. Tomorrow i'm going to examine her in a bit more detail with a glove. I'm wondering if she has a tumour? Has anyone had anything similar. We're probably going to take her tto the vet if it looks iffy. We're both agreed that if there's anything that's progressive we'' have her PTS. Don't want her to suffer and she's okay at present. Trouble is that chickens can deteriorate so quickly. Fur 'n' Feathers
Well it looks like our suspicions might be right. Took Koukoula to the vet tonight and he felt she possibly had a tumour. He could feel a lump and with the rapid weight loss over the last 2 weeks and the malabsorption it seemed to point to it. She was still eating, bright eyed, drinking quite a bit, comb & wattles red. However, when the lump area was palpated she was clearly uncomforatble if not in pain - winced a little. And she was definately no longer top hen. It might make some sense of the feather eating earlier in the year. She had plenty of minerals and protein, but if it wasn't getting into her system, well.... We left her there to be PTS. They are going to have a look tonight and phone us tomorow with an update on hat they find. This was an option we wanted to take as it means we'll have an idea for the future & it helps them in their work. We'll post on the forum what we're told - probably tomorrow. Hopefully it will halp other omleteers too. Had always wanted a light sussex. At least she had a good life.
