pure breed or hybrid?

Recommended Posts

hello newcomers to the world of chickens!!!!

we have been given 3 hens and a cockeral, the hens are a hybrid, light sussex and barred wyandotte, the cockeral is a blue laced red wyandotte.

we are looking to get a few more hens in but not sure of the advantages of pure breeds over hybrids (someone said that hybrids dont live very long???)

any advice would be great!!!!

Having had both. There are pros and cons in both camps.

Hybrids: Great egg layers especially in their first two years, you'll get an egg most days.

Less chance of going broody

Usually cheaper to buy

Very friendly

Good either in a run system or free ranging

Live fast, die young

Often have problems with their laying tackle in older age

Pure breeds: Much more selection of breeds

Can go broody easier

Less eggs per week but live and lay for longer

Usually have less health problems

Hope that helps.
