3 eggs a day?

Recommended Posts

Hi i'm new to keeping chickens, and some strange things are happening!

My three girls are about 27 weeks now, and were laying two blue eggs and one tinted.

Today I opened my nest box to find 3 tinted eggs!! Is it possible for one chicken to lay three eggs in one day, or have the others changed colour!

Help, very confused, any ideas anyone, thanks.

A chicken can only lay 1 egg a day (it is a little less than this). Is it possible that some of the colouring has come off the eggs in the nesting material? I don't know in your breeds when the colour is added to the shell. Some it is early and it is the colour of the shell, others put it on later in the process and the colour can actually get washed off.

Hope you get to the bottom of the mystery. :)

Not so...chickens often lay 2 a day - I have had it happen 3 times, & although it is uncommon (I have kept hems for 6 years or so),it is not unheard of.

So,one girl may have laid twice in one day, especially if the eggs are small & she is new to laying :D

I stand corrected. :) It wasn't until later I realised they are new to laying and then nothing should be surprising I suppose. I'd never heard of 3 proper eggs in one day though. I had thought it took about 21 hours. That's why I come on this forum for though - I keep learning things. (and no one laughs too much at me when I spout rubbish :lol: )
