Home for the winter - winter prep!

Recommended Posts

Now with winter fast approaching I am planning where to "shore" the cube over winter. We currently move it around the garden but will not be doing this in the winter months. I need to find a decent substrate to put on the floor of the run. Just would really appreciate what everyone recommends and how often do you need to change it.

I also have a few concerns with all the gaps in the cube with the cold getting in. Anyone had any issues?

Many thanks in advance :)

No issues at all with my girls in a Cube - and I measured -17 degrees C in my walk in run last winter. It is important to have at least some ventilation, as hens need to keep dry to keep themselves warm.

As a substrate, the best I've found is playground woodchip. I've also tried wood chippings as sold by B&Q etc; it doesn't last as long but is a lot cheaper. I tend to change it when it starts looking messy, so it's around every 6 weeks or so.
