pecking order

Recommended Posts

I am sure this subject has been covered a million times on here but just one more time please :)

We had our 3 girls all at the same time 3 months ago 2 GNR 1 PP and they all get on really well together , all this time Clover the PP has been the so called boss but just this last week things seemed to have changed and Florry the biggest of the 2 GNR seem to have taken over. They seem to still to all get on but clover seems to have become second in command.

If Clover is eating out of one of the 2 grubs for example Florry pecks the back of her neck so she moves from it even though there is plenty of food elsewhere. The same with the windfalls when FR Florry has to have the one Clover has, pushes her or pecks her out of the way.. but when Clover is out of the way she does not want it.

Clover used to be the last into the coop at night roaming about after the others had tucked up but now it is Florry.

Poppy the last of the 3 is not bothered by all this and is not treated the same way.

Why does it happen all of a sudden :?:

If you have only had them 3 months or so then I suppose they are still quite young - maybe Florry decided she was all grown up now and it was time to stand up and be counted :D I don't really know, our pecking order confuses me too. Our PP is definitely above (Bluebelle) , she re-established that quite clearly in a flurry of feathers after recovering from her broody spell. But our GNR really doesn't seem to bother about it. She is fastest to the treats and is not intimidated by the others, but she's never fluffed up or jumped up at the others, nor has she crouched or acted submissive in any way. She just ignores the others' shenanigans like she is oblivious to it all. I don't really know what that means! I'm sure they all know though

My chickens' pecking order is a bit of a mess. Mainly because I've got 3 sets of chickens in 3 coops, and it's hard getting the balance right with intros.

My PP is a cowbag, she picks on everyone except my GNR who she has lived with since she came here.

My GNR is slightly less aggressive towards my (cube red) girls and my silkies, though she likes to snack on the silkie feathers if she's bored, so I try not to put the silkies with her on her own.

My silkies get picked on by my skyline, but Doris, my littlest silkie squares up to and bullies my hybrid girls (the blue haze, speckled star and amber)! (which is hysterically funny. she marches up to them with such purpose and then gives them a pretty ineffectual peck which sends them packing).

So in short, I could put my silkies in with my (cube red) girls, without the skyline. I can't put my PP and GNR in with my (cube red) girls as they really terrorise them. They need a lot of work until I can put all the hybrids in the (cube red) and leave the silkies in their (pink eglu) .

Chicken politics is confusing :eh:

Oh my goodness squiffs and I am confused about only 1.

If I remember rightly you got your GNR and PP on the same day as me.

I think it is just Florry growing up , I think Jennym you are probably right , but if that is the only thing I have to concern myself with ...then I am lucky :)

Yes, I got them 23rd June!

Then I got my Silkies on 31st July.

And then a few weeks ago I got some more hybrids.

Threw myself in the deep end a little bit, but once they're all sorted out I won't have to do it again for a while! (unless morehens strikes again :anxious:). I'm planning to get some different coloured silkies next year for my birthday but I'm fairly confident I can deal with silkie intros, they're so fluffy they can't see properly when they peck, which means more often than not, they miss
